Home Design And Redecoration 101

When it comes to redecorating your home, you may find that you could benefit from the help of a professional home designer. Often, you'll find that a professional home designer can provide you with insights and recommendations that you wouldn't otherwise think about when you're redecorating. Here's a look at some of the tips that your home designer may share to help you get the final result you're hoping for.

Assess The Space You're Working With

The first thing you should do, whether digitally or on paper, is to draw out a diagram of the space you're working in. Work on one room at a time, drawing out a floor plan of each room. Mark the location of any doorways, closets, outlets, and other fixtures. This space assessment is an important step for visualizing what you're working with.

While you're creating the floor plan, make a point to identify anything in the room that could serve as a focal point. If there's any kind of special architecture or a fireplace in the room, you can create your entire room design around that point of interest.

If there's no clear focal point in the room, create one with your design. Incorporate a striking throw rug, hang a collage on the wall, or choose a unique piece of furniture that will draw the eye when you walk in.

Think About Balance In Your Design

One of the biggest things that interior designers focus on is creating a sense of balance in a room. That means having the same basic layout on each side. For example, if you're generating a focal point around a fireplace, you'll want to make sure that you have a chair on each side of the fireplace. You can place a table in the middle to connect the two, but avoid putting furniture only on one side of the room because it leaves the space looking unbalanced.

The same applies to your wall decor. If you hang something on one side of the room, you should balance it with something on the other side. They don't have to be the same things, but they should be similar enough in design that they create a cohesive appearance.

Select A Theme

Once you have settled on your layout and chosen your focal point, it's time to get to the details. You'll want to choose a theme for the room. Think about how the room will be used. You'll want a more comfortable, mature theme in a study or a den compared to what you'd want in a playroom or a child's bedroom.

Choose a paint color that fits the overall feel you're looking for, then choose furniture colors and patterns that will complement that paint. This is important to ensure that you get a cohesive, attractive final design in the room.

Work with a home designer to ensure that you get the final environment that you're hoping for from your redecoration.
